Abstract text

This paper studies the effects of dialect-speaking on job characteristics of Dutch workers, in particular on their wages. Using the geographic distance to Amsterdam as an instrumental variable, we find that male workers who speak a dialect daily on averagehave significantly lower monthly earnings and hourly wage. For females we also find wage penalty of dialect-speaking but not significantly different from zero.
